ALL PISTONS FIRING AS WIDEMAN, JACKALS SILENCE QUEBEC

Quebec City, QUE – In the previous two meetings between the New Jersey Jackals and the Quebec Capitales, New Jersey eked out a pair of late inning come from behind victories. On Friday evening in front of a packed house at Stad Municipal de Quebec, the Jackals left little doubt about the outcome as they scored five runs in the top of the first inning against Capitales starter Eric Gagne on their way to a 7-0 win.

Gagne (6-6) struggled early with his control, walking two of the first three batters he faced before right fielder Myron Leslie smacked a two-run double to right that opened the scoring. That was just a precursor of things to come as left fielder Jerod Edmondson immediately followed up with an RBI-single. The next batter, catcher Matt Lauderdale, got a fastball out over the plate that he turned on and blasted over the left field wall for a two-run home run – his fifth of the season – to make it a 5-0 Jackals lead.

New Jersey would score two more times, a run in the second courtesy of an RBI-single by center fielder Timo Perez and then a throwing error in the eighth by Quebec center fielder Goef Tomlinson allowed Edmondson to set the final score.

The offensive outburst by the Jackals was more than enough for starter A.J. Wideman who put together one of his best starts of the season, beating the Capitales for the fourth time this season in five starts. The left-hander struck out four of the first six batters he faced on his way to seven shutout innings, continuously frustrating the Quebec hitters as well as their fans. Wideman (10-1) scattered five hits while striking out six batters and not issuing a single walk. Kevin Gunter and Mark Suchowiecki would each pitch one scoreless inning of relief to help shut the door on the Capitales and allow the Jackals to secure the season series with Quebec.

New Jersey and Quebec will continue their series tomorrow evening with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Quebec City. The Jackals will send right-hander Ted Serro to the mound while the Capitales will counter with the veteran Michel Simard. Joey Whelan will have the live call of the game at www.jackals.com with the pre-game show starting 10 minutes prior.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ.
